Dealing with Stress and Anxiety

It’s the middle of March and the stress and anxiety is beginning to kick in… two dissertations, a 5000 and a 3500 word essay all due in the next five weeks. Even though I know everyone is in the same position, it’s hard not to feel like you’re in a whole ‘stressy bubble’ of your own sometimes.

When I started my degree almost three years ago now, I was under the impression it wasn’t going to be too bad… “I love history” I said… “This will be fun” I said. Lol… how wrong I was!! I do find it hard to deal with the pressure of university work – especially now in my final year. BUT – I have learned a lot in these three years which have really helped me overcome my stress and anxiety and get the job done.

Don’t be afraid to talk about it

I think sometimes we think that admitting to feeling pressured is a failure, but it really isn’t! Talking to one another about our mental health is so important to having a positive outlook on life. Don’t think yourself anything less than amazing for admitting to struggling with what you’re taking on. Nothing worth having is an easy ride, and you will feel so much better after just getting it off your chest.

Have some ‘Me’ time

(My personal fav as a procrastinator haha) This is so important, the only struggle is knowing when to stop relaxing… kind of like me right now (I mean look how chilled I look in my 50s shades lol)! Do what you need to do to rid your mind of that built up pressure and anxiety – go shopping, have a nap, take a bath, have a night off and watch a film… whatever it is that makes you feel refreshed and ready to take on the world. We all need it now and again.

Put some relaxing music onย

Music is so good for stopping me feeling anxious. I like to listen to piano music on YouTube while studying to get my brain in the right ‘mood’. I find that if I don’t put it on, I can’t focus and all I can think about is “I’m so stressed about this essay!” Once I have some relaxing, calm music, those thoughts completely disappear and I find I can do anything…….. even if I do end up on my blog eventually ๐Ÿ˜‰

Realise that success isn’t a number

This has been a difficult one for me to accept but I am learning with every essay I write. Success is not the grade you get, or the comments you receive, but the very process of getting there in the first place! Although it’s great to get a high mark, it’s a very accomplishment in itself to not give up and continue to pursue something which is difficult.

Reward yourself

Similar to my last tip – it’s important to celebrate all accomplishments you have, regardless of the grade! Don’t forget that you don’t have to be doing this, but you’re here and that deserves credit in itself. After you submit that essay, make sure you pat yourself on the back and feel good before anything else.

Remember – life isn’t all about your studies

Okay, I don’t want to sound silly when I say this, because I know that getting GCSE’s, A-Levels, a degree and so on is really important. BUT – it isn’t everything. There is so much more to life than being clever… really! Family, friends, love, travel, FOOD (obvs the priority)… the list could go on and on. Remember that those things are SO much more important than getting the highest grade you can.

Sorry if this post is a little bit rambly, it’s just been on my mind lately and it actually really helped me to write it out! I’ve been feeling pretty rubbish myself lately, so it’s important to take a minute and appreciate the things in life that matter before dwelling on something which will only make me more stressed! Ultimately (can you tell I’m in essay writing mode??), we all need to remember that we gain NOTHING from stress and anxiety – it is just a vicious circle of self-doubt and worry. Remember how far you have come and how many good things you have going for you – that’s what matters.

What I wore in Lincoln!

It’s me againnnn, not posting on time as usual ๐Ÿ™‚ I’d play the ‘I’m so busy’ card again but – honestly – it’s more that I’m just dozy and forgetful! I’ve been on reading week from uni this week and I’ve had lots of work to do – of course this is when the weather pipes up and starts being sunny to tempt me away!! When summer comes and I’m finally free it will be raining every day – just you wait!! Continue reading “What I wore in Lincoln!”
